Printable Lined Paper: Free Templates to Print or Download

Choose primary writing paper, picture-and-lines, or a spelling grid. Set US Letter or A4, then print the page or save it as a PDF or PNG.

Choose a blank paper template

Blank templates do not use text tracing or name inputs. Every option keeps its own paper layout.

How to make printable lined paper

Pick a template, choose your paper size, then print or download. There is no sign-up, no watermark, and nothing to install. The preview updates when you change the layout, paper size, or orientation, so you can check the page before saving it.

  1. Pick a template. Primary writing paper gives you guided handwriting rows. Picture + writing puts a drawing frame above the lines. Spelling practice gives you Word / Try / Practice columns on the same ruling.
  2. Set paper size and orientation. Choose US Letter (8.5 × 11 in) or A4 (210 × 297 mm), in portrait or landscape.
  3. Print or download. Print from your browser, or save a PDF or PNG to print later or share with a print shop.

Each output is created in the browser from the settings shown in the tool. You can make another copy with a different layout or page size without installing an app or creating an account.

Choose a printable lined paper template

Three layouts cover common handwriting and classroom tasks. They share the same clean primary ruling where handwriting lines are used, so a learner can move between writing, drawing, and spelling activities without learning a different set of guides.

Primary writing paper

Four-line rows with a dashed midline help a child see where tall letters stop and where a letter sits on the baseline. This is a useful layout for kindergarten, first-grade, and second-grade handwriting practice.

Picture + writing paper

A drawing frame sits above ruled rows. Use it for “draw then write” journal prompts, story retelling, and science observations where the picture is part of the answer.

Spelling practice paper

Three columns — Word, Try, Practice — use the same primary ruling. Write a word from a list, spell it from memory, then copy it correctly: repeated practice on one sheet instead of three.

If you are printing for a writing journal, choose Picture + writing. The drawing frame sits above the ruled rows so the picture and the sentence stay on one page. The frame scales with the template, so it works for a single sentence in kindergarten as well as a short paragraph in second grade.

This layout can also support a simple story sequence: draw a scene, then write a few lines about what is happening. For a science notebook, the picture area can hold a labeled observation while the ruled section holds the learner’s explanation. Select landscape if the drawing needs more horizontal room; portrait leaves a taller area for writing below it.

The frame is part of the Picture + writing template rather than a separate border control. Choose another template if you want a page made only of writing lines or spelling columns.

For older children and adults who only need the lines, choose Primary writing paper and set the orientation to portrait. You get a page of guided rows with no drawing frame, leaving the writing area clear. Landscape gives each row more width and can suit longer writing or a page that will sit beside another worksheet.

Primary ruling has four guide lines in each row: top, middle, baseline, and a lower guide. The dashed middle guide helps show letter height, while the solid baseline gives letters a place to sit. This generator currently offers primary handwriting guides; it does not have separate wide-ruled or college-ruled spacing controls.

Printable lined paper for A4 or US Letter

US Letter is 8.5 × 11 inches and is commonly used by printers in the United States. A4 is 210 × 297 millimetres and is a standard paper size in many other regions. Choose the size loaded in your printer to avoid an unexpected scale change or content near the printable edge being clipped.

The generator uses the selected paper’s own page dimensions for both sizes rather than treating an A4 sheet as a resized Letter image. The line spacing is kept consistent; because the two page proportions differ, the available writing area and number of rows may differ as well. You can also choose portrait or landscape for either paper size.

If you are unsure which size to choose, check the paper setting in your printer dialog or on the paper package. Matching the worksheet and printer settings is the simplest way to keep the margins and ruling in the expected place.

Printable lined paper for different kinds of practice

A notebook gives you one ruling, one page format, and the margins chosen by its maker. Printable lined paper lets you match the page to the task: guided rows for a young writer, a picture frame for a journal prompt, or spelling columns for a weekly word list. You can print one page or make additional copies from the same settings.

A blank page can be useful when the learner already knows what to write and only needs consistent lines. If the activity needs a name or word to trace, use thename tracing worksheet generatorinstead. For letter-by-letter print practice, visitalphabet tracing worksheets.

These pages are generated from your current browser settings. The page does not add text to a blank template; choose the spelling layout if you want labeled Word, Try, and Practice columns, or use the picture layout when a drawing area is part of the activity.

Before printing a class set, open the browser print preview and confirm the selected paper size matches the worksheet. Printing at 100% or Actual size preserves the page’s intended dimensions. “Fit to page” may scale the sheet, so check that the ruling still has the size you want before printing multiple copies.

  • Turn off browser headers and footers if the URL, date, or page number overlaps the worksheet.
  • Check the printer’s printable margins; many home printers cannot print all the way to the edge of the paper.
  • Review the bottom and side edges in preview, especially after changing orientation or paper size.

Printer dialogs use different labels, and results can vary by device. If the first page looks clipped or too small, correct the paper size or scaling option in the print dialog and check the preview again before printing more copies.

Make a class set without an account: choose a template and paper size, then print the number of copies you need from your browser. A saved PDF keeps the generated layout together for later printing. Before sharing copies, review the page and the applicableWriteSprout Terms of Use; the current terms do not set out a separate resale or redistribution license.

For an individual learner who needs their own name traced, create one page at a time in the name tracing worksheet generator. For connected cursive letter practice, use thecursive handwriting worksheet generator or browse cursive writing worksheets. These tools cover different practice needs, while this page stays focused on blank lined paper.
